As a French Translator & Reviser at the World Bank in Yaoundé, Cameroon, you will play a crucial role in facilitating clear and effective communication within a multicultural environment. Your expertise in translating complex documents and revising existing translations will ensure that vital information is accessible to French-speaking stakeholders, contributing to informed decision-making and strategic planning. By bridging language barriers, you will support the World Bank’s mission of promoting sustainable development and poverty reduction in the region, all while fostering collaboration among diverse teams. This position not only enhances your linguistic skills but also immerses you in a dynamic international organization dedicated to impactful global initiatives.

Duties and Accountabilities

  • Produces self-revised translations, primarily from English to French, of a wide range of World Bank documents, ensuring their accuracy, completeness, consistency, stylistic acceptability, and on-schedule delivery.
  • Prepares translations, often of a sensitive or confidential nature, and frequently on short notice.
  • Researches each source document thoroughly, fully using translation aid tools and systems available in order to ensure that the appropriate specialized terminology is employed.
  • Revises translations produced by other translators.
  • Checks the content and the format of documents translated following computer-assisted processing if applicable.
  • Supports terminology development work.
  • Communicates with other translators working on the same document or subject, ensuring consistency of style and terminology in the final products.
  • Communicates with clients on documents translated and delivered.
  • Organizes own program of work and reports to supervisor.
  • Pays particular attention to keeping computer and information technology skills up to date, and to remaining abreast of general developments in the translation/interpretation field.

Selection Criteria for French Translator & Reviser

  • Minimum: Master’s degree with five years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Preferred: Degree in translation or Post-graduate degree in translation, economics, finance, law or social sciences, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • French as primary language (i.e., native-level ability) or mother tongue.
  • Excellent comprehension of English; comprehension of Portuguese and Spanish as a source language would be desirable.
  • Proficiency in the use of relevant standard software packages, e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Lotus Notes, etc.
  • Proficiency in the use of web-based terminology and reference tools.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of CAT Tools, e.g. SDL Trados, etc. as well as use and maintenance of translation memories (please specify in your application)
  • Ability to work under very tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment and build effective working relations with clients and colleagues.
  • Specialized knowledge in fields such as public finance, accounting, law, or the social sciences would be desirable.
  • Qualification as an interpreter would be considered as an asset.

Note: Shortlisted candidates will be required to sit a translation test in person. Only the highest scores will be invited to interviews.
